Michael Phelps is an American former competitive swimmer who holds the record for the most Olympic medals won by any athlete, with a total of 28 medals, including 23 gold medals. He is also the most successful athlete in Olympic history, with the most gold medals won by any individual athlete. Phelps won his first Olympic medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, and went on to compete in five Olympic Games, winning medals at each of them.

Phelps' Early Life and Career

Phelps was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 30, 1985. He began swimming at the age of 7, and by the age of 15, he was one of the top swimmers in the United States. Phelps made his Olympic debut at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where he won a gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly and a silver medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay. Phelps continued to improve throughout the 2000s, and by the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, he was considered one of the greatest swimmers of all time.
