UK to Pay Rwanda £120m to Help Boost Economy
Rwanda Asylum Plan Announced
The UK government has announced that it will pay Rwanda £120m to help boost the country's economy as part of a new asylum plan. The plan, which has been met with criticism from human rights groups, will see asylum seekers who arrive in the UK illegally sent to Rwanda to have their claims processed.
Inaugural Flight Stopped
The inaugural flight of the plan was stopped in June 2022 after an intervention from the European Court of Human Rights. The court ruled that the plan was unlawful and that the asylum seekers should not be sent to Rwanda.
Deal with Rwanda
In April 2022, the UK government announced a deal with Rwanda to send asylum seekers there in exchange for hundreds of millions of pounds in development aid. The deal has been criticized by human rights groups, who say that it is inhumane and that it will put asylum seekers at risk.
One-Off Sum of £120m
Under the terms of the deal, the UK will pay Rwanda a one-off sum of £120m to help boost the country's economy. The money will be used to fund projects such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
Further Payments
In addition to the one-off payment, the UK will also make further payments to Rwanda based on the number of asylum seekers who are sent there. The payments will be used to fund the costs of processing asylum claims and providing support to asylum seekers.
